CLUB TIJUANA WOMEN’S TEAM HOST LA VILLA FC SUNDAY

Club Tijuana | Liga MX | 05/23/2015

Team is in first 2015 Women’s Professional Soccer League season

TIJUANA- Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles will continue to be represented as a regional club with its woman’s team. It reached a milestone when the “Xolas” made its 2015 Women’s Professional League (WPSL) season opener last week, becoming the only Mexican club with a woman’s team in the United States.

A new era continues as the Xolas host L.A. Villa FC, a second year team, in a Week 2 match of the WPSL’s Pacific South League Sunday 3 p.m. at San Ysidro High.

The Xoloitzcuintles have shown full support for the woman’s team. Planning to implement the team into the organization’s plans began about two years ago. The move began with Xolas head coach Andrea Rodebaugh, a former captain of the Mexican national team.

Playing in the WPSL, which occupies the second tier on the United States Women’s Soccer pyramid, helps the players to become more visible to possible pro and college scouts in the United States. The WPSL fields 70 teams with players from different clubs, colleges and universities. The Xolos have players with experience at the national team and university levels.

Players such as Fabiola Ibarra and Carolina Jaramillo. They both featured Mexico in the recent Under-20 World Cup in Canada. Ibarra was called to Mexico’s 2015 FIFA World Cup senior team roster earlier this week.

The Xolas squad also includes players who have won local and national championships. The Xolas also include players who live or attend schools in California. Goalkeeper Itzel Gonzalez is one of them. She studies at the University California San Diego (UCSD).

Club Tijuana’s Women’s team is coming off a 4-0 loss to 2014 WPSL National Champion Beach FC of Long Beach last week in its debut. The Xolas look to bounce back in this Week 2 match at San Ysidro High, its home field for the season.
