An overview of what’s coming in 2015 in the Women’s Premier Soccer League
Over the years, Women’s Premier Soccer League’s has seen a lot of change. The league prides itself on being the most innovative women’s league in the country. The goal of the WPSL is, and has always, been to empower female athletes across the country and provide them with the opportunity to continue bettering their level of play. Because of this, the WPSL always looks for new opportunities for growth and development.
The strength of our league is shown by the commitment made by our teams to work with each other for the betterment of women’s soccer. We have provided in the past and will continue to provide, players for all levels of the US Women’s National Team, as well as other nations over the years. Former players are also now NCAA D1 coaches, investing their experiences in the WPSL into developing female players and coaches throughout the US.
As we enter our 18th year as a league, we have several important announcements that we are excited to bring to our fans.
The 2015 season will be the debut season for more than 12 new WPSL teams. Not only will we have new teams coming in from within the country, but we are excited to announce the introduction of international teams from Canada and Mexico joining us in 2015. Tkaronto Justice will joins us from Toronto, Canada, and play their games in Niagara Falls, New York. Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente will be playing out of Tijuana, Mexico, competing in the Pacific-South Region. There are also more expected newcomers from Canada this season, which could be announced later this month.
Our two current NWSL reserve teams, the Boston Breakers and the Chicago Red Stars, will return for the 2015 season. FC Kansas City and Seattle Reign will not have reserve teams enter the league this year, as we incorrectly stated before. Instead, WPSL teams will be working with FC Kansas City and Seattle Reign.
At the WPSL, we are also proud to announce our new Inner City Soccer Program for Girls. This program, in coordination with Black Soccer Coaches Committee Chairman Daniel Gordon, will aim to introduce girls to soccer in order to keep them on a path to a healthy lifestyle, and also build their self-confidence. We will continue to bring you more information about this thrilling new project as it develops.
The final number of teams that will participate in 2015 will be determined by February 15. The 2015 WPSL schedule is still currently being drafted, and is expected for release at the end of the month following the finalization of the regions and the WPSL General Meeting. After the meeting, another league update will be released, along with the schedule.
